Tariff Buster – International Market Expansion Strategy
Have your exports been negatively affected by the latest US imposed trade tariffs?
If you have then we have a great solution for your company which can be implemented within a week.
The solution is an international market expansion strategy, where we give you access to alternative markets world-wide.
In terms of research the first point of call is a tool made available by Google which shows the interest shown for your products in various countries – Google Trends.
According to https://oec.world/en/tariff-simulator?exporter=zaf&importer=&partner=&tariff=30 South Africa mainly exports Cars as a manufactured product, so we’ll use it as an example:
[The Observatory of Economic Complexity (OEC) is an online data visualization and distribution platform focused on the geography and dynamics of economic activities. The OEC integrates and distributes data from a variety of sources to empower analysts in the private sector, public sector, and academia. The OEC is currently designed and developed by Datawheel, but it began as a research project at MIT’s Collective Learning group (former Macro Connections Group). The OEC was the Master Thesis of Alex Simoes (2012), directed by Professor Cesar A. Hidalgo.]
The main vehicle manufactured (assembled) in South Africa is VW, so we go to https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?q=vw,volkswagen&hl=en-GB which shows:
1. The interest over the past 12 months for the search terms “vw” and “volkswagen”.
2. Below the graph Google Trends shows the countries that carry the greatest demand for the search terms:
As shown, there is interest shown for both search terms (“vw” and “volkswagen”) in various countries.
We can obviously assume that most European countries will source goods from Europe i.e. directly from Germany.
We’ll have to find alternative markets to target.
There are several options here, with countries like Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, Egypt, Algeria, Mexico, Brazil, UAE, Uruguay, Argentine, Vietnam, Malaysia, Morocco, Russia, India, Peru, Chile and Colombia. Obviously further researching each market and establishing whether they don’t have VW assemblage themselves.
A component of further research can be the Google Keyword Planner which shows an estimation the actual search numbers in each country.
Here is an example of search numbers in Indonesia:
Using this tool you can not only see the search numbers, but also all other related searches, giving you a granular overview of what the market is looking for.
This then forms part of the initial market research we conduct before creating a promotional strategy that gives your company access to your chosen markets targeting the searches performed by your target market, thereby delivering double qualified (easy to convert) business leads.
